City Thomaston is a town in Knox County, Maine, United States on the banks of the inlet which drains the Saint George River. The population was 3,748 at the 2000 census. The first European presence was a trading post in 1630 that remained continuously open despite Indian raids. Settlement began in 1783. Thomaston prospered in the early 1800s as a port and shipbuilding center. Around 1840, two of seven recorded millionaires in the United States were Thomaston sea captains.
