St. Charles is a census-designated place and planned new town in Charles County, Maryland, United States, immediately south of Waldorf, which is the mailing address. As of the 2000 census, the population of the CDP was 33,379. It was started in 1965 and is halfway through completion as outlined in its master plan. St. Charles is composed of a half-dozen separate planned residential neighborhoods, each one having a long circular main drive, with short streets with alphabetical names radiating out. Some neighborhoods have scenic community lakes with walking paths. Many residents commute to Andrews Air Force Base or other parts of the Washington, D.C. area. St. Charles Town Center is a 400,000 square foot regional shopping mall serving residents of a large four-County area.
