New Rochelle is a city in the southeast portion of the U.S. state of New York in Westchester County, 16 miles from Grand Central Terminal in New York City and 2 miles north of the border with The Bronx. It lies on the Long Island Sound east of Mount Vernon. Settled by Huguenots in 1688, it is mainly residential with some light industry. The city is named after the city of La Rochelle in France, which was a stronghold of the Huguenots. In 2000, the city had a population of 72,182. It is one of the largest suburbs of New York City, the seventh-largest city in the state of New York, and the second-largest city in Westchester County.
