Hallam is a borough in York County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,532 at the 2000 census. The town attracts people because of its name, like Intercourse and Paradise. It was named after surrounding Hellam Township which was further named after a field of boiling brimstone on the outskirts of town. This looked so bad that early colonial named it Hellam. However, by the time it was incorporated in 1902 it was known as Hallam, possibly to remove the Satanic feel. You can see signs in the area mentioning the town as both Hellam and Hallam.
